From Mr Christopher Haffner

Sir, - The Ethical Investment Advisory Group, having said that "well-established genetically modified organisms" may be "cultivated on land owned by church investing bodies" (News, 8 March), how could it possibly be "inconsistent" for field trials of GMOs to be conducted on such land, with due precautions?

Establishment of the safety of GM crops is an urgent matter in a world where millions are starving, so that they can be extensively used. The Church should spearhead this, not offer a mealy-mouthed, inconsistent compromise.
