Speaking In Tongues by Paul Benney, artist-in-residence
at Somerset House, London, was unveiled at Leicester Cathedral on
Wednesday of last week. The new work will be exhibited there until
8 June, before touring other cathedrals this year. The subjects
portrayed are friends and contemporaries of the artist, and are
depicted as the Apostles, with Pentecostal flames hovering above
them. The resin surface of the painting creates a shine, designed
to reflect the viewer, to simulate the effect of entering the
picture. The Dean of Leicester, the Very Revd David Monteith, said:
"This monumental painting begs me to ponder whether God's fire
might just be still at work in the world, enabling new languages
and visions to emerge."
