Cathedrals — and a loyalty card?

From the Dean of Rochester

Sir, - Thank you for the photographs of all our beautiful and varied cathedrals (Features, 26 July) - although I must admit to not being able to identify all of them.

Apart, maybe, from the top ten, it seems to me, our cathedrals and their wonderful heritage in faith and in the arts are one of the best-kept secrets in our country. In an average year here in Rochester, we receive about 150,000 visitors, many of whom enter the building to the view that you reproduced, stand there, and say "Wow!"

We could, of course, accommodate many more visitors, and would love to, as we seek to live out our Benedictine inheritance of welcome to the visitor. Maybe now is the time for a more joined-up approach to cathedral tourism? A loyalty card?
