100 years ago: No illusions: East is East

August 22nd, 1924.

THERE is a common misunderstanding in this country concerning the causes of the unrest in India and the almost universal opposition to British tutelage in Egypt. We read that these movements affect only a small Westernized minority of the native populations, and that the educated majorities are indifferent to them. This is a dangerous illusion. In India certainly and in Egypt, to some extent, the unrest is not the result of Westernization, but is a revolt not only against Western rule, but against Western ideas. Mr. Gandhi is an Oriental mystic. In our sense of the word he is not a politician at all. The East is no longer dazzled by European civilization. It is hungering for the development of its own culture, founded on its own classical traditions. If this is understood, and if the Christian Faith, which is already attracting more and more of the best minds in India as well as in China and Japan, is widely taught to the people by their own native teachers, there is, we are convinced, no cause to fear Oriental re-awakening. It is true — and it is a fact that we must always remember — that European civilization is the creation of the Catholic Faith. But in His earthly life our Lord Himself was not a European, and our own faith is limited indeed if it does not give us the assurance that Christianity may inspire a new civilization in Asia and Africa, a civilization linked to the Universal Church, but in its essentials un-European.
