ON MONDAY afternoon, the Synod approved the reappointment of Clive Mather to chair the Church of England Pensions Board for a final term from 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2029. The appointment is made by the Archbishops. Mr Mather was initially appointed to the post from 1 May 2019 to 31 March 2023. A former chair of the Shell Pensions Trust, he had brought “substantial senior management acumen and experience to bear” in the Church, a background paper said. This included governance reform, climate-change work, simplification, cost-reduction, long-term investment. Moving the motion, the Archbishop of York told the Synod that the position was unpaid and unglamorous, and that Mr Mather had far exceeded the estimated 50 days of work a year. The Archbishop praised the joint work of the Pensions Board and Church Commissioners on climate change. The vote was carried without debate.
