Together with Christian Resources Exhibitions, we bring you Church Times Live, a series of discussions on some of the biggest issues facing today's Church.
Join us for one or more seminars on Thursday 18 October at CRE 2018, at Sandown Park, Esher. Book a free advance ticket here
11.00am Environment and the church and society
The Church Times has actively covered the topic of climate change for more than two decades. In 1997, Sir John Houghton wrote: “What is now required is real commitment to action by governments, by industry, and by individuals.” More than 20 years on, the same sentence could be repeated, though with much more urgency.
At CRE we'll be taking stock of current scientific thinking, reflecting on this theologically, and exploring what the Church can do. With Richard Black, former BBC environment correspondent and director of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit.
12.30pm Inspiring Music in Worship
How can churches best use music to enhance worship and mission?
Our panel will explore some of the common issues parishes face, from tension between traditional and contemporary styles of worship, to the question of what do when resources are limited. With the Royal School of Church Music, and its new director, Hugh Morris, among others.
2.15pm Where are all the young people?
The demographic statistics in the Church of England are stark. In London, a city with more than 300,000 11-18s, just 2000 are in C of E churches. Across the country, the average C of E church has just three children attending, and the smallest 25 per cent have none at all. There is talk of a Church in crisis.
In this session our panel of youth workers will explore the trends under-pinning these numbers, discuss what we can do about it, and look at reasons to be hopeful. We’ll also open up the debate to the floor, to give you an opportunity to share your stories and ask our expert panel for advice.
With Ali Campbell, Savannah John-Leighton and Polly Baker. Chaired by Madeleine Davies, features editor at the Church Times.
Entrance to all three seminars is included in your CRE 2018 ticket. Tickets are £8 on the door but as a valued Church Times reader we invite you to attend free of charge with our compliments:
