THE final two words of the book’s subtitle — in bold print — jump out to grab the potential reader. Here are practical checklists and achievable goals, using “the science of habit formation and the power of spiritual disciplines”, not only to help you to “know and love God”, but to “lead you down the path of the woman you want to become”, starting now.
Covering Bible-reading, prayer, solitude, celebration, friendship, and “Practicing [the book is American] the Presence of God”, the author draws on her own experiences — from parenting three small children to bouts of depression — to explore how to grow in faith even when life is overwhelmingly busy. She also provides a “Spiritual Health Check — A no-judgment self-assessment”, small group questions, and a downloadable workbook from her personal website to apply the learning further.
While the chatty style will not appeal to everyone, there is welcome realism here about the effort of discipleship. If “holy habits” do not become second nature, they will be sidelined when the emotional tank is depleted or the daily task list is unending. Of course, the Holy Spirit is at work in every Christian, but every Christian also has a part to play in that process — and the “small, simple ways” offered by this book provide a starting-point.
The author’s view of the scriptures is uncompromising: “Over the span of two centuries . . . God gave His words to forty human authors, who recorded those revelations over three different continents.” Even if that is disputed, a busy mother, or a frazzled cleric, may come across some helpful ideas, such as starting the day by picking up a Bible rather than always reaching for a mobile phone.
The book’s US context means that some of the cultural references and practical suggestions may be unfamiliar to UK readers. I am personally unsure about “singing ‘Holy Spirit activate!’ at the top of my lungs” when circumstances begin to feel overwhelming — but maybe that’s just my British reserve.
