THE Governors of Exeter Cathedral School have taken “the extremely difficult decision” to close its prep provision, owing to “unavoidable financial pressures”.

In a statement published on the school website last week, the Governors said that years three to eight, which include the Cathedral’s choristers, would close, but that “Exeter Cathedral has confirmed a new partnership with Exeter School from September, to ensure the choristers can continue their studies together, locally, and in a co-educational environment.”

The Inspired Learning Group (ILG), which runs more than 30 independent schools and nurseries in the UK, had agreed, subject to contract, “to take over the running of the school’s Nursery and Pre Prep (up to year two)” — also from September, the Governors said. “As part of the arrangement, Hall House will work in close collaboration with Shebbear College, an established ILG through school, close to Okehampton, Devon.”

A year ago, the Labour Government’s manifesto pledge to remove the VAT exemption for all private education and boarding services came into effect, meaning that these institutions were subject to VAT at the standard rate of 20 per cent.

At the time, Church of England bishops expressed concern about the effect on both SEND schools and independent schools which offer bursaries and scholarships, including cathedral schools which support the education of choristers (News, 9 September 2024).

The statement by the Governors of Exeter Cathedral School continued: “We understand the impact this will have on our entire school community, our students and their families, as well as our dedicated staff and we are committed to working closely with everyone to provide guidance and support, including assistance with next steps for students and staff. . .

“Exeter Cathedral School will remain open in its current form until the end of the summer term in July 2026, continuing to provide high-quality education and pastoral care throughout this period.”
