This week’s selection: an exploration of anxiety within a Christian framework; a collection of Henri Nouwen’s writing; and a history of English Benedictine nuns

Blessed Are the Anxious: Faith in seasons of anxiety by Claire Williams (Canterbury Press, £12.99 (£11.69); 978-1-78622-641-9)

Blessed are the Anxious offers a deeply personal exploration of chronic anxiety within the framework of Christian spirituality. Claire Williams draws on her own experience to navigate the complexities of the anxious life, and provide insights into the potential for hope found in the regular rhythms of Christian faith and practice.

Encountering Henri: The living legacy of Henri Nouwen, edited by Stephen Lazarus (Orbis, £22 (£19.80); 978-1-62698-662-6)

Ten years after Henri Nouwen’s death in 1996 Orbis published Remembering Henri, a collection of essays by people close to Henri. 2026 will be the thirtieth anniversary of his death and the Nouwen Society has undertaken a revised edition, including some of the original essays (some updated) with many new ones―including not only people who knew Henri but others who encountered him only through his writings after his death.

A Happy Homecoming or a Second Exile? The journey of English Benedictine nuns from exile in Europe to revival in England 1795-1840 by Scholastica Susan Jacob (Sacristy Press, £25 (£22.50); 978-1-78959-414-0)

When English Benedictine nuns fled Revolutionary France and the Low Countries, they expected refuge in their homeland. Instead, they encountered poverty, prejudice, and profound identity conflict. This was not a triumphant return - it was a second exile. Drawing on rich, previously untapped archives, Scholastica Jacob uncovers the dramatic story of five Benedictine communities navigating displacement, rebuilding monastic life, and shaping Catholic revival in a Protestant England.”
