100 years ago: The Church and the miners

IN OPENING the Church Assembly on Monday afternoon, the Archbishop of Canterbury referred to the possibility of serious industrial trouble in the early summer, and, while urging Churchpeople to remember the duty of constant prayer that such trouble may be averted, ruled that it was not the function of the Assembly to discuss the causes of unrest or to suggest remedies. We are in cordial agreement with his Grace’s pronouncement. As Mr. Iremonger said at the Guardian luncheon, it is a task of immense difficulty to apply Christian principles to the solution of any definite problem; while, on the other hand, the full recognition of the consequences of the Christian Faith must create an atmosphere in which every problem can be solved. It would be more than foolish not to recognize the possible dangers of the immediate future; but there is increasing evidence of the desire to preserve peace in the coal-fields, and if there is peace in the mines there will probably be peace all through the world of industry. Mr. Herbert Smith, the President of the Miners’ Federation, and several of the most influential of the miners’ leaders have made speeches during the week, professing their confidence that conflict will not occur; and this spirit of good will is strengthened by the knowledge that Mr. Baldwin is ready to use his utmost endeavour to save the country from disaster. Unfortunately, the mischief-makers are busy, and once more Sir William Joynson-Hicks has gone out of his way to irritate labour with theatrical threats.
