Chichester posts
THE next Archdeacon of Chichester is to be the Revd Dr Thomas Carpenter, Priest-in-Charge of St Luke’s, Southport, since 2019, and Vicar of Holy Trinity, Southport, since 2021, in Liverpool diocese. He supported the community after the fatal knife attack on a children’s dance class in the parish last August.
He trained for ministry at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, was ordained priest in 2017, and served his title in Sheffield diocese, before moving to Liverpool diocese in 2019.
He succeeds the Rt Revd Luke Irvine-Capel, now Bishop of Richborough.
The diocese has also appointed the Revd Emma Ham-Riche to the new post of non-stipendiary Associate Archdeacon for Diversity and Inclusion. She has been Priest-in-Charge of St John’s, Preston, with St Augustine and St Saviour, Brighton, since 2022, and Rural Dean of Brighton since 2024.
She will become a member of the Bishop’s Staff Meeting and will, the Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, explains, “assist the bishops and archdeacons in monitoring the concerns of those who have particular needs and often feel themselves to be unrepresented in the decision-making forums of this diocese”.
She trained for ministry at St Augustine’s College of Theology, was ordained priest in 2020, and served her title in Chichester diocese.

BRASCHI. The Revd Lawrence Braschi, Vicar of Pennycross, now also Area Dean of Plymouth City (Exeter).
GARDINER. The Revd Scott Gardiner, Assistant Curate of All Saints with St John the Baptist, Stamford (Lincoln), to be Vicar of Hampsthwaite and Killinghall and Birstwith (Leeds).
GRIFFITH. The Revd Gareth Griffith, Assistant Curate of Lechlade, Southrop and Eastleach, in the South Cotswolds Team Ministry, now Priest-in-Charge of Moreton-in-Marsh with Batsford, Todenham, Lower Lemington and Longborough with Sezincote (Gloucester).
MARCH. The Revd Stephen March, Assistant Curate (Pioneer Minister) of the Hexagon Benefice (Leicester), to be Chaplain of St Mark’s, Versailles, with St Paul’s, Gif-sur-Yvette (Europe).
OBAFEMI-ONUIGBO. The Revd Maria Obafemi-Onuigbo, Priest in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, to be Chaplain of St Nicholas’s, Helsinki (Europe).
PAWSON. The Revd John Pawson, Vicar of Bursledon, to be also Area Dean of Eastleigh (Winchester).
PHILLIPS. The Revd Matthew Phillips, Chaplain of Uppingham School (Peterborough), to be Team Rector in the Papworth Team Ministry (Ely).
