Dean retires

THE Very Revd Simon Cowling, the Dean of Wakefield, in Leeds diocese, since 2018, is to retire on 31 July.

He was ordained priest in 1992, serving curacies in the then Ripon & Leeds diocese. His first incumbency was at Roundhay, in the same diocese, from 1996 to 2007. Other posts included those of Canon Precentor of Sheffield Cathedral, Rector of Bolton Abbey in Bradford and then Leeds diocese, and an honorary canon of Ripon Cathedral.

The Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Revd Nick Baines, said that Dean Cowling had served “through some turbulent times in recent years. He has shown confidence and resilience, whilst bringing stability and consistency to cathedral life. . . His wisdom, advice, and counsel will be missed.”

A farewell service will be held in Wakefield Cathedral on 6 July.
