New C of E booklet invites the faithful to explore the Nicene Creed

16 June 2025

‘Structured as a 24-day devotional, We Believe invites readers to engage prayerfully with each phrase of the Creed’

Church of England

A NEW booklet inviting churches, small groups, and individuals “to engage prayerfully with each phrase” of the Nicene Creed is now available.

We Believe: Exploring the Nicene Creed, is published today by Church House Publishing, to mark the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, whose deliberations ultimately led to the adoption of the Nicene Creed. The Creed was amended to its present form at the First Council of Constantinople, in 381.

The booklet “explores the theological depth and contemporary relevance of the Nicene Creed — one of the most enduring and universal expressions of Christian faith”, a statement from Church House says.

“Structured as a 24-day devotional, We Believe invites readers to engage prayerfully with each phrase of the Creed. Through daily Scripture passages, thoughtful commentary, prayers and prompts for reflection, the booklet encourages individuals and communities to explore what it means to say ‘we believe’ in the context of today’s world.”

The chair of the Liturgical Commission, the Bishop of Lichfield, Dr Michael Ipgrave, said: “The Nicene Creed has been a cornerstone of Christian belief for 1700 years — a statement of faith that connects us not only to one another, but also to generations before us as well as to Christians across the world today.

We Believe is a timely and beautifully written resource that will help churches explore this historic creed afresh, inviting reflection, deepening discipleship, and opening space for theological discovery. I warmly commend it to parishes, groups and individuals across the Church.”

Printed copies are available as single booklets or in packs of ten. The reflections that it contains are also available, from today, on the C of E’s Everyday Faith app.
