THAT there are many more women than men in the congregations of most churches is a fact frequently deplored and sometimes cited — rather oddly in these feminist days — as evidence of the decadence of religion. But according to a London dramatic critic, in the audiences of the London theatres the predominance of women to men is five to one. This is certainly considerably greater than the average predominance in church. There may be many reasons why women are more zealous than men both in church-going and in theatre-going. The reasons may not be the same. But it is disconcerting to be told on authority that it is the woman theatre-goer who makes it profitable to stage sex-plays, and who is conspicuous in appreciation of such nastiness as the recent scene in which two women grew more and more drunk in the sight of the audience. . .
