In the Franciscan Gardens, Canterbury, next to the Greyfriars Chapel, the (Anglican) Society of St Francis held a eucharist on 11 September as part of the commemoration of nine friars’ arrival 800 years ago. During the first stage, “We Remember”, of this month’s anniversary events, Anglicans and Roman Catholics joined for an RC mass on Dover beach with the Minister General of the Greyfriars, Friar Carlos Trovarelli, OFM Conv. This was followed by a walking pilgrimage to Canterbury, Franciscan evening prayer in the cathedral crypt, a lecture and dinner, and other activities. Events continued in London, including a visit to Lambeth Palace, and concluded last Friday and Saturday in Oxford, closing with a mass in Blackfriars Chapel. The original party of friars minor, led by Agnellus of Pisa, had travelled at first via Dover to London and Oxford, but, within 16 years, the Order had grown and was to be found throughout England, Wales, and Scotland.
