Recollections

John Wood writes:

MY WIFE and I were devastated to learn of the tragic death of the Revd Steve and Kathy Burch (News, 6 September). They had both been members of the young people’s group at St Martin’s, Cambridge, where I was one of the leaders. Steve’s parents (Den and Jen) brought up the family in a small council house, which was always open to visitors. The family welcome sometimes included a homemade wine-tasting in a shed in the garden. Steve left school and, I believe, worked on a farm before he felt called to the ministry. This was initially difficult, given his few qualifications, but Steve battled away and was accepted by St John’s College, Nottingham. My wife reminded me that both he and Kathy, along with Den and Jen, helped to put up our greenhouse more than 40 years ago, and it is still standing. Although we failed to keep in touch with them, I always looked to see Kathy’s name on the CPAS adverts, which reminded me of the good times that we had with them when they were teenagers.
