THE third volume of The Life and Times of a Victorian Country Doctor: A portrait of Reginald Grove, is entitled Life as a Medical Man, and has been edited by his grandson Peter Flower. Grove, destined to be a doctor from his early years, was married to Hilda, the sister-in-law of Fred Palmer, manager and subsequently sole proprietor of the Church Times, and four chapters focus particularly on the devout couple’s own journey of faith (Brown Dog Books, £29.99 (£27); 978-1-83952-495-0). Volumes 1, Life at Home (£24.99 (£22.50); 978-1-83952-207-9), and 2, Life at Boarding School (it was Thring’s Uppingham) (£24.99 (£22.50); 978-1-83952-206-2) appeared in 2021. The books give a detailed picture of middle-class life during the period.
