ANNETTE ESSER is the author of The Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Book (Liturgical Press, £23.99 (£21.60); 978-0-8146-6765-1). This highly illustrated paperback on good-quality paper, more than 300 pages, provides a map of an 87-mile pilgrimage route from Idar-Oberstein to Bingen on the Rhine, in Germany, which the author initiated and which was officially opened in 2017. She goes on to provide descriptions of ten stages, broken up into “tableaux”, with devotional material, followed by a selection of poems and songs. The author, an academic theologian and artist, sets out a detailed guide to the journey in honour of this medieval nun and musician, who is commemorated ecumenically, and was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. The book also has spaces for recording the pilgrim’s own spiritual reflections.
