Scaffolding in Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris, surrounds the finding of tombs and a leaden sarcophagus thought to date from the 14th century. The coffin is believed to have been made for a senior dignitary. The sites were unearthed this month during preparatory work for the rebuilding of the spire at the point where the transept crosses the nave. Elements of painted sculptures were also found just beneath the current floor level of the cathedral, identified as parts of the original 13th-century rood screen
