DAVID EMERTON, the director of St Mellitus College, East Midlands, has written God’s Church-Community: The ecclesiology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the series T&T Clark Studies in Systematic Theology (£28.99 (Church Times Bookshop £26.09); 978-0-567-69773-8). The author argues that Bonhoeffer’s thought leads the way to a genuinely theological account of the Church, which holds divine and human agency together and helps to reconcile empirical and dogmatic approaches.
John Chryssavgis’s The Letters of Barsanuphius and John: Desert wisdom for everyday life (T&T Clark, £19.99 (Church Times Bookshop £17.99); 978-0-567-70485-6) introduces the counsel of two hermits who lived in Gaza in the mid-sixth century and were much consulted on spiritual matters. Metropolitan Kallistos Ware said of this book: “While placing the two Old Men in their historical context, [the author] shows also the timeless quality of their answers.”
