Ludwig Messel, the creator of the famous garden at Nymans, a National Trust property, in Sussex, arrived in England in 1865. This photo, taken about the time of his marriage in 1869, is from From Refugees to Royalty: The remarkable story of the Messel family of Nymans. It is a lavishly illustrated hardback by a great-great-grandson, John Hilary. Another descendant became the 1st Earl of Snowdon on his marriage to Princess Margaret (Peter Owen, £25 (£22.50); 978-0-7206-2106-8)
