THE Revd John Horton’s moving book Behind the Wire: A prisoner of war in Nazi Germany publishes the considerable correspondence, loving and hopeful, in spite of suffering, between his newly married parents, after his father was sent in 1940 on active service to Egypt and Crete, and taken prisoner. From there, he was transported to a POW camp for the duration of the war (Vanguard Press, £11.99 (Church Times Bookshop £10.79); 978-1-80016-259-4).
