Quotes of the week

21 May 2021

I was lucky, and blessed to score. Those kind of things you can’t explain. You can’t explain a lot of things in life. For me, the only reason for those kind of things is God, and he put his hand on my head today

Alisson Becker, nicknamed “the Holy Goalie”, after becoming the first goalkeeper to score a matchwinner in a Premier League fixture, heading Liverpool’s winner from a corner, Match of the Day interview, 16 May

You know, you’re such a scientific, logical person that I thought that you could possibly have some logical back-up to it

Brendan O’Connor, to Richard Dawkins, after the latter had told a woman worried about having a child with Down’s syndrome: “Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have a choice.” Dawkins admitted to O’Connor that he did not know anyone with Down’s, RTE Radio 1, 15 May

When I came back from Christmas break, I came back to my room and there was a cross burning on my desk. Needless to say, it was very upsetting. I went to speak to a priest from the administration about what had happened, and the first thing he said to me was, “What did you do?” He insisted that no one would have burned a cross in my room for no reason, so I must be at least in some way to blame. “Maybe it’s because they don’t like Black people,” I suggested

Bruce Wilkinson, retired RC priest in the United States, recalling being the only Black man in his seminary. He has been a priest for 40 years, America magazine, 15 May

Here’s what “Jesus Take the Wheel” is about. It’s a woman, and she’s on the road with her baby. . . and she starts to slide on black ice, and, this is the chorus — she lifts her hands off the steering column, and she says “Jesus take the wheel, take it from my hands” — and Jesus drives her to safety. If that lady was Jewish, she would die immediately. When she gets to heaven . . . God’s like: “What were you doing?” And she’s like: “I put my faith in you.” And he’s like: “That’s not how I work! Are you kidding me?” And she’s like: “You should have saved me.” And he’s like: “I gave you hands! What more do you want from me?” And she’s like: “I just trusted you?” And he’s like: “Since when has that been my MO? Are you confusing me with my son?”

Alex Edelman, BBC Radio 4 stand-up show, 11 May

Commending the Living in Love and Faith (LLF) materials to the diocese, Bishop Mark asks everyone to engage in the conversion process

Mark Tanner, Bishop of Chester, typo in the Chester diocesan bulletin, 12 May
