Walsingham pilgrims can slake thirst with new beer

14 February 2020

ANDREW WADDISON

PILGRIMS visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham will soon be able to taste a new beer created in collaboration with the Barsham Brewery near by to celebrate more than 1000 years of pilgrimage.

The idea came from a visit to the brewery by the Shrine Priest, the Revd Andreas Wenzel, and his team.

The sales manager of Barsham’s, Jules Knight, said: “We all enjoyed a brewery tour, tea and cake, as well as a beer tasting, of course.

“Fr Andreas discussed a collaboration between us, and, a few weeks later, while visiting the shrine, we decided to create a beer to celebrate the ancient and modern Walsingham pilgrim, and Pilgrim’s Pale Ale’ was born.”

The shrine’s director of operations, Christopher Hamilton-Emery, said: “Walsingham’s own Pilgrim’s Pale Ale is a great symbol of this synergy between pilgrimage and local business.”
