This detail of a painting, c.1525, in the north transept of Romsey Abbey (St Lawrence Chapel), is one of the colour plates, most of which are photos specially taken by James O. Davies, in Hampshire: South in the Buildings of England series, whose text comments: “This large board is that uncommon survival, a complete reredos, rediscovered in 1813 in the wall behind the high altar.” The authors of the fully revised and expanded version of this Pevsner guide are Charles O’Brien, Bruce Bailey, Nikolaus Pevsner, and David W. Lloyd; and there are contributions by Simon Bradley and Barry Cunliffe (Yale, £35 (£31.50); 978-0-300-22503-7)
