AS AN Anglican university chaplain, Rowan Clare Williams writes A Theology for Chaplaincy: Singing songs in a strange land (Grove, eD34, £3.95 (£3.55); 978-1-78827-035-9). Among the questions that she addresses are what chaplaincy is, why universities need chaplains, and “Prophetic or Incarnational?” She considers chaplaincy as active accompaniment, and recalls H. A. Williams’s comment that “Chaplains do not need to feel they have only three years to save a student’s soul; not only is that the process of an entire lifetime, but it is also God’s job rather than theirs.”
