A LABOUR of love for medieval music and liturgy by Andrew A. Horsman, The York Processional (978-0-9545531-4-2) is an edition of Bodleian MS e Mus. 126, which includes not only a historical introduction and critical notes, but also a full performing edition in parallel versions so that it can be sung in Latin or English (performers will need to be able to read plainsong notation). The Processional, which predates 1389, was made for a parish church in the diocese of York (probably Thornton-in-Craven), and is a rare survival of the musical catastrophe of 1550. Liturgies from the Use of York (this is Volume 1 of a series) have been sung at All Saints’, North Street, in the city during Dr Horsman’s ministry there over the past 30 years. The book is available from The Rector and Churchwardens of All Saints’, North Street, York YO1 6JD, for £25 plus £4 p&p; www.allsaints-northstreet.org.uk. GP
