Known Unknowns, by John L. Bell and Graham Maule, and Hymns for All Seasons, edited by Paul Inwood

THE book Known Unknowns: 100 contemporary texts to common tunes by John L. Bell and Graham Maule seeks to “make the most of minimal congregational song resources in an accessible and resilient way”: texts on about 40 themes or subjects, including 15 psalm paraphrases, are provided for 80 tunes likely to be known by congregations familiar with a modest repertoire from the classic hymn books — which will be needed for the music (Wild Goose Publications, £11.50; 978-1-84952-567-1).

Hymns for All Seasons: The complete works of James Quinn, SJ, edited by Paul Inwood, is the first comprehensive collection of hymns by a Roman Catholic author who died in 2010. Set to many fine classic tunes, they include plenty of eucharistic texts and translations from Latin (available direct from Oregon Catholic Press, ocp.org, edition 30132863, $40).
