MADRID is to host the European youth Taizé meeting for the first time at the end of this month.

Thousands of participants from all across Europe will attend the meeting — 3500 young people from Poland have already registered, the event’s organisers say.

The theme, proposed in a text which the Prior of Taizé, Brother Alois, published for the occasion, is “Let us not forget hospitality”.

Taking part in the event are 170 parishes, with thousands of families preparing to receive visitors in their homes. The organisers say that 800 volunteers will take part; 250 buses will arrive on 28 December; and they expect to produce 45,000 servings of hot food. Orders have been placed for 7.5 tons of bread, 39,000 oranges, and 95,000 mandarins.

The event will take place from 28 December until 1 January. It will be the 41st European youth meeting.
