HYMNS Ancient & Modern, the Church Times’s parent charity, this week launched a free e-book service for anyone training for ordained or lay ministry in the Church of England. The move is designed to ease the financial burden on poorer students and ordinands.
One hundred books, among them core texts for theological learning from the SCM Press and Canterbury Press lists, have been made available through the Church of England’s digital learning hub.
The books can be accessed for free by any of the 2500 students currently on the Common Awards programme, the partnership between the Ministry Division, theological colleges, and Durham University, which provides accreditation and support for the C of E’s ministerial training.
Among the authors available are Walter Brueggemann, E. P. Sanders, Sam Wells, and Barbara Brown Taylor. See below for the full list of books available.
The C of E’s online learning hub was launched two years ago. Dr Ken Farrimond, an e-learning adviser, said this week that it had already experienced “tremendous growth. . . We hope these e-books will prove a valuable asset for students training for licensed lay ministry or for ordination.”
The CEO of Hymns Ancient & Modern, Dominic Vaughan, said: “We believe this initiative will enrich the Church of England and the wider Church with valuable resources for study, reflection, and prayer.”
