Synod news in brief

by
24 February 2017

THE Draft Statute Law (Repeals) Measure was revised on Tuesday afternoon, moved by the Revd Paul Cartwright (Leeds). There was no debate.

THE Draft Pensions (Pre-Consolidation) Measure was revised on Tuesday afternoon. The Dean of the Arches, the Rt Worshipful Charles George QC, said that consolidation would be introduced next year. No submissions had been received from members on the draft Measure.

THE appointment of Mark Sheard to the Archbishops’ Council was confirmed. The Archbishop of York, Dr Sentamu, said that the vacancy had arisen from the departure of Philip Fletcher. The Council was fortunate to have secured someone of Mr Sheard’s gifts and skills, he said, including his commitment to mission and experience of working with organisations to help them to communicate with the wider world. Tim Hind (Bath and Wells) welcomed the proposal. In 1999, he said, the Synod had been presented with six names to be members of the Council with “precious little background” about the candidates. He was thankful that the situation was now different.
