In 1520, Martin Luther burns a copy of the papal bull threatening his excommunication, Exsurge Domine (the artist has copied the first printed edition in this portrayal), and other church writings in front of the city gate in Wittenberg, in a children’s book, The Life and Times of Martin Luther by Meike Roth-Beck. The artist for this book is the award-winning illustrator Klaus Ensikate (Eerdmans Books for Younger Readers, £14.99 (£13.50); 978-0-8028-5495-7)
