‘He turned round on his branch with his back to Peppi and sulked’

21 December 2017

One of Sally Abel’s many colour illustrations for Peppi, Mary Roe’s book for children about the adventures of a dachshund (including a journey on a Rhine steamer), shown here with his mapgie friend Mr Elster. The broadcaster the Revd Richard Coles contributes a foreword, in which he reveals that his dachshund Audrey is “happy for it to be known that she is the model for Peppi’s mother (and Peppi, too)”. The book has been printed by letterpress at the Logan Press, Finedon, and is available for £25 from Coles Books of Bicester, www.coles-books.co.uk; phone 01869 320779
