The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, observes a target-striking contest by the Korean People’s Army; and (below) the US Vice-President, Mike Pence, looks towards the north from an observation post inside the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas, in Paju, on Monday. Last week, the World Council of Churches joined the National Council of Churches in South Korea in expressing “grave concern” about the deployment of US aircraft carriers towards the Korean peninsula, amid military escalation in the region. North Korea claims that it has developed, and would launch, a ballistic missile that could strike the US mainland
