Patron of England: the reredos in the Chapel of St George

St George and the dragon, carved in pale oak in the reredos of the Chapel of St George (the chapel of the 22nd Cheshire Regiment) in Chester Cathedral, to a design by Giles Gilbert Scott, whose grandfather restored the cathedral, where the Victorian Gothic additions were intended to harmonise with the magnificent 14th-century woodcarving of the quire. One of the many fine large colour photos in the paperback Chester Cathedral (Scala, £10 (£9); 978-1-78551-079-3), text by Jessica Hodge
