An actor playing Jesus Christ objects to the marriage of the Bride of Christ, representing the Church of England, to a man representing the fossil-fuel industry, in a staged “wedding” outside Church House, on Monday. The sketch was organised by Christian Climate Action, a campaign group, “to encourage the Church of England to show moral leadership and divest from the fossil fuel industry”, a statement said. The group disagrees with the C of E’s current policy of “engagement — holding shares in the industry and using shareholder status to try to change the industry’s behaviour” — because “there is not enough time to prevent runaway climate change having a devastating impact on people and God’s creation” (Letters, 5 May).
