Sir, — Could I mention to Professor Dana Arnold (Features, 11 September) that in pre-Reformation times the two side wings of triptych altarpieces in churches would have been closed during Lent? No doubt portable altarpieces were protected when travelling by folding the side wings, but I have always assumed that they, too, would have been closed during Lent.
