Jerusalem should be declared an international city

From Mr Mark T. Jones

Sir, — Barely a week passes without more news of violence in Jerusalem. Seemingly, a place of sacred significance to three of the world’s great monotheistic religions has become synonymous with enmity and death.

Over the years, there has been much wringing of hands, but few have dared to address the fundamental causes. Intractable problems call for radical solutions. Is it not time that Jerusalem was declared and administered as an international city?

Such a suggestion will be greeted with howls of protest in some quarters, but surely the Holy Land, and that is indeed what it is, deserves a fresh approach, one that respects and takes cognisance of three great faith traditions. The practicalities of such an approach will, of course, be a challenge, but this is as nothing if we permit the current situation to drag on and deteriorate still further.
