Goodbye with cake

06 February 2015

IT REALLY was a splendid cake to bid farewell to the Bishop of Aston, the Rt Revd Andrew Watson, when he left the Birmingham diocese to become the new Bishop of Guildford. It had been baked by Charlotte Gibson, from Selly Park, who is 26, and works for the cathedral's communications team, but is currently on maternity leave.

She says that she spent a total of 30 hours creating the image of Birmingham Cathedral. "I worked from several different images," she explains, "and really enjoyed making such a special cake for Bishop Andrew's service. The cathedral is such a beautiful building. I'm just glad I did it justice."

More than 300 members of the congregation, friends, and colleagues of the Bishop attended the farewell service in December. The Dean, the Very Revd Catherine Ogle, spoke for many of them when she said: "We were all astonished at the level of detail Charlotte achieved. She did a fantastic job of recreating the cathedral that we all love. It tasted good, too."
