When the Synod debates the refugee crisis

Sir, — “Synod to discuss migrant crisis at its first sessions” (News, 6 November): no doubt it will have in mind the Archbishop of Canterbury’s dictum that we should take one Syrian refugee for every thousand of our population.

Whether that is right for the present time I really don’t know; but Synod members would need to take into account that about 100 of each of those thousands would be relatively recent immigrants and their families. One cannot persist with simple ratios in compound situations for very long before the outcome is considerably different from the apparent intent.
