EMERTON. — On 12 September, the Revd Dr John Adney Emerton: Assistant Lecturer in Theology at the University of Birmingham (1952-53); Lecturer in Hebrew at Durham University (1953-55); Lecturer in Divinity in the University of Cambridge (1955-62); Visiting Professor at Trinity College, Toronto (1960); Reader in Semitic Philology in the University of Oxford, and Fellow of St Peter’s College, Oxford (1962-68); Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge (1968-95); Emeritus Professor since 1995; Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge, since 1970; Hon. Canon of St George’s Cathedral, Jerusalem, since 1984; aged 87.

GRAINGER. — On 13 September, the Revd Dr Roger Beckett Grainger: Chaplain of Stanley Royd Hospital, Wakefield (1973-90); Hon. Assistant Curate of St John’s, Wakefield, since 1993; Diocesan Drama Adviser, since 1998; Professor Extraordinary of Potchefstroom, University of South Africa, since 2001; Hon.
