From the Revd Daniel Njuguna

Sir, - The testimony of Anne Booth-Clibborn about Christian Aid (Comment, 8 May) is inspired and inspiring.

As a Kenyan, I have witnessed at first hand the transformation of many lives in Kenya through projects sponsored by Christian Aid, addressing needs such as sanitation, environment, conservation, education, and many more. Now that I live on the other side of the globe, I am privileged to give to Christian Aid.

The complexities of some of the problems faced by society in the UK and other parts of the world clearly indicate that they cannot be solved by firing a silver bullet. The story of Christian Aid, however, bears testimony that a great deal can be achieved when Christians (Churches) speak with one voice and act with compassion.

As Mrs Booth-Clibborn recounts, 70 years ago Churches in Britain came together, in the face of huge opposition, determined to bring relief to the needs of people in Europe regardless of nationality. I hope the spirit of the time will blow in the direction of our times, giving determination to Churches in offering relief to many in peril as they try to cross the Mediterranean sea seeking refuge in Europe.
