From the Revd Martin Kelly

Sir, - Of readers who responded to your Question of the Week (News, 11 July), 78.5 per cent thought that Bishop Inwood was wrong to withold Canon Pemberton's licence. I hope no church funds would be used to defend Bishop Inwood from any charges of unlawful discrimination which might be brought against him.

Supposing your poll to be representative of the Church of England, such money could not be spent with our consent. Bishops, like anyone else, have to be responsible for their own behaviour, and pay for the consequences.
