James McNeill Whistler's 1895 portrait of Rosie Randall, The Little Rose of Lyme Regis, is his "finest portrait of a child", Professor Daniel E. Sutherland says in his Whistler: A life for art's sake (Yale, £25 (£22.50); 978-0-300-20346-2). It is one of this new biography's many colour plates. Among the half-tones is Whistler's own photo of his Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother
