HER name is Mary, she is 86 years old, and she was one of the
stars of the classic car show in the grounds of All Saints' C of E
Primary School, Harworth, in Southwell &
Nottingham diocese. She is owned by Mark and Carolyn
Stewart, both regulars at All Saints', in the village.
Mr Stewart has postural tachycardia syndrome, a debilitating
chronic condition that includes a fast heart-rate when the patient
stands up, and severe fatigue. The Stewarts wanted to raise money
for Syncope Trust And Reflex anoxic Seizures (STARS), a charity
that works to improve treatment and help inform patients about the
condition, and they approached the Priest-in-Charge, the Revd Leah
Vasey-Saunders, to ask whether they could organise a car show in
aid of both the church and STARS.
"It turned out to be a wonderful occasion," Mrs Vasey-Saunders
says. "There was a definite sense of surprise that this was in and
for Harworth, and a little bit of a sense of pride and achievement
that has led to a feeling we can do bigger and better next
year."
A grand prize draw was held, and every ticket was sold - one of
the prizes was a ride in a microlight aircraft - raising about
£2000 for the church. The show raised a further £1100, and the
money was shared with STARS.
