Too modern? A work commissioned for St Chad's, Rubery, by the
architects Lavender, Twentyman & Percy, in 1959, installed, but
then removed at the behest of the diocese shortly before the church
was consecrated, has been acquired by the Ingram Collection, and is
initially on display at The Lightbox, Chobham Road, Woking (phone
01483 737800). It is Square World I-V, five aluminium
reliefs by Geoffrey Clarke RA (born 1924), who also created work
for Coventry and Lincoln Cathedrals. He was inspired by
pre-Christian and early Christian symbols, but the DAC objected
that the pieces diverged too radically from what the Church had
originally suggested. the lightbox.org.uk;
