POPE Francis is watched during his visit to the Solmoe Sanctuary in Dangjin, South Korea, on Friday.

The five-day visit was his first to Asia, and the first by a pope to the country, where a tenth of the population is Roman Catholic, since 1989.

While flying over China, he sent a telegram of greeting to its President and people, who are not permitted to recognise his authority. On his way back to the Vatican, he joked that he might die within "two or three years".

Minutes later, he learned that the wife and two children of his nephew had been killed in a car crash in Argentina. His nephew was badly injured.
