Photo: In their prime

18 July 2014

In their prime: a Church Lads' Brigade parade in Howard Gardens, Cardiff, outside Eglwys Dewi Sant - an Anglican church for Welsh-speakers commissioned in 1891 from the architect Bruce Vaughan, and, unusually, furnished with an immersion font. The church was destroyed by enemy action in 1941. This is one of the historical images in Jean Rose's Cardiff Churches Through Time (Amberley Publishing, £9.99 (£9); 978-1-4456-1092-4), which includes "now" as well as "then" photos, and an informative text on the history of the buildings, of various denominations, and their congregations, up to the present
