Brothers across the Channel

14 November 2014

A NUMBER of French RC priests are now ecumenical canons of Church of England cathedrals, and now the Very Revd Nicholas Frayling (left in photo), Dean Emeritus of Chichester, has been inaugurated as a Canon of Honour of Chartres Cathedral.

A civic twinning exists between the cities of Chichester and Chartres, Dean Frayling says, and the relationship between the two cathedrals has developed in parallel. This has been greatly strengthened in the past decade. "Chichester Cathedral's European twinships owe much to the influence of Bishop George Bell, and include Bamberg Cathedral and the Lutheran diocese of Bayreuth."

In presenting Dean Frayling with his insignia of office, the Rector of Chartres Cathedral, Chanoine Dominique Aubert (centre), said: "It is in God's love that we find the strength to love and the light to love the other, especially to love this Christian brother that history has somehow placed far from me, but with whom I love and desire perfect communion. . . In this hope, full of confidence, may the Lord help us to taste this morning our joy to be together." Accompanying Dean Frayling was the Acting Dean of Chichester, Canon Tim Schofield (right).
