Common tenure

From the Revd Paul Collier

Sir, - Further to "New tenure found inflexible" (News, 28 February): in 2011, I was given a temporary appointment under common tenure. In order to prevent my exercising my right to remain permanently in post, I was simply asked to sign a letter of resignation at the same time as my licensing.

As I was quite happy to accept a temporary position, there was no difficulty in this arrangement. It may not have been a cast-iron legal arrangement, but it surely provided a reasonable compromise.
